Building Tech That Scales to 100 Million Rides - Anders Ivarsson, CTO of Voi
How do you scale shared micromobility tech to hundreds of millions of rides?
At Micromobility Europe 2025, Voi’s CTO Anders Ivarsson shares the hard-earned lessons from operating 150,000+ vehicles across 110+ European cities, serving 300M+ rides and generating 100B+ daily data points.
In this talk, Anders breaks down why scale itself isn’t the challenge in micromobility; the real challenge is complexity.
EU E-Bike Imports Show Modest Recovery
In Q2 2025, the EU imported 182k e-bikes. Although this marks an increase from Q1 2025 (129.9k units), the volume remains below Q2 2024 (216.6k units) and Q2 2023 (243.2k units), reflecting a modest recovery from recent lows but a continued YoY decline.
E-Bike and E-Scooter Trial Launches in Yate and Chipping Sodbury
A six-month trial of rental e-bikes and e-scooters began in Yate and Chipping Sodbury, extending the service to around 30k more residents. Operated by Dott, the trial is supported by the Mayoral Combined Authority and South Gloucestershire Council. It is accompanied by a safety campaign promoting responsible riding and includes measures such as designated parking zones, fines for misuse, and a requirement for e-scooter users to be 18+ with a provisional driving licence. All vehicles are GPS-tracked to ensure safety and enforcement. The trial follows recent expansions in Bristol, Bath, and surrounding areas.
Bird Scooters Exit Grand Junction
Bird has ceased operations in Grand Junction, removing all of its scooters from the city. The company cited tariffs impacting vehicle shipments as the reason for its withdrawal, leaving Lime as the sole operator. Bird and Lime first launched a combined fleet of nearly 550 scooters in 2023 under the city’s Micromobility Program. While stepping away now, Bird indicated it may consider returning in the future under the right circumstances.
7ANNA Group Files for Insolvency
After 24 years in business, 7ANNA Group has filed for insolvency, but emphasizes this is not the end of operations. The company continues to sell and service bikes, support customers, and plans to release new models while negotiating with investors for a sustainable future.
The filing follows a series of severe setbacks over the past three years, including: the bankruptcy of a major client, bank-related funding delays, the collapse of a key supplier, a significant cyber theft, and a default on payment by a large customer. These events, coinciding with a critical loan repayment deadline, made the company's survival extremely difficult. Management is pursuing restructuring to secure the future of its brands.

Eau Claire Proposes 15 mph Speed Limit
The Eau Claire City Council is considering a new ordinance that would impose a 15 mph speed limit for bikes, e-bikes, scooters, and other personal vehicles on city trails and public sidewalks. The proposal comes after years of safety concerns from residents about the high speeds of these vehicles, especially e-bikes and scooters, sharing space with pedestrians. A public hearing on the proposal is scheduled for an upcoming council meeting.
First Solar-Powered E-Bike Station Launched in Somerville
Massachusetts has opened its first solar-powered e-bike charging and rental station in Somerville. A collaboration between Metro Mobility and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA), the off-grid station uses solar panels and a battery to charge bikes. Income-qualified riders can rent a bike for $1 per day. The project, seen as a scalable blueprint for clean transit, will collect data on usage and performance to guide future deployments across the state.
Montgomery County Triples E-Bike Fines
Montgomery County has tripled the fine for e-bike violations on its trails from $100 to $300. The increase is a proactive measure to improve safety, citing a rise in accidents and injuries. The county's rules for trail use include a 15 mph speed limit for all vehicles and specify that e-bikes must not exceed 100 pounds, must have a motor under 750 watts, and must be equipped with functional pedals. The county is home to over 100 miles of popular trails.
