Lime, Neuron Exit Yarra Over Fee Hike
Lime and Neuron have pulled their e-scooters from Melbourne’s City of Yarra, which includes Fitzroy and Richmond, after the local council raised daily permit fees from $1 to $5 per scooter. The council said the increase was needed to cover the $570,000 annual cost of running the program, including collecting abandoned scooters and dealing with safety complaints. Both companies said the new fee made it financially unworkable to stay. The council plans to launch a new tender process later this year and hopes multiple operators, including Lime and Neuron, will return.
Voi Expands to 41 Cities in Germany
Voi has expanded its shared mobility services in Germany with the launch of e-scooters in Mönchengladbach on March 24, making it the 41st city in its German network. A launch in Neuss is expected soon. At the same time, Voi is introducing 400 of its new Explorer 4 e-bikes in Lübeck, which becomes the first city in Germany to feature this model. Starting April 1, 2025, 120 e-bikes will be available, with more to follow in the coming weeks. Riders can also benefit from zero activation fees during the initial months.

Hamilton Bike Share Seeks Funding
Hamilton City Council will vote in April on a proposed $258,000 increase to annual funding for Hamilton Bike Share Inc. (HBSI), bringing total support to $744,000. The 50% boost is intended to cover rising operational costs, as funding hasn’t been adjusted since 2022. HBSI, a non-profit that took over the system in 2020 after Uber’s exit, currently operates 825 bikes across 143 stations. Recent developments include a mandatory $24.50 fee introduced in September 2024 for McMaster University's 26,000 full-time undergraduates, providing them with bike share memberships.
Ideal Bike Reports Revenue Drop in 2024
Ideal Bike Corporation, Taiwan’s third-largest bicycle manufacturer, reported a 27.5% drop in annual revenue for 2024, totaling TWD 2.65 billion (~€76 million). This marks a continued decline from TWD 3.66 billion in 2023. The company’s sales have now decreased for three consecutive years. Ideal operates factories in Taiwan, China, and Bulgaria, and manufactures bikes for multiple global brands alongside its own label. The decline aligns with broader industry trends, with other major players like Giant Group and Shimano also reporting year-on-year revenue decreases.
Bolt Warns of Potential Exit from Lithuania
Bolt has warned that it may shut down its scooter-sharing service in Lithuania if proposed road safety amendments are approved. The draft law would require all e-scooter riders to wear helmets and mandate that operators provide them. Bolt cited a previous trial in Vilnius where 1,000 helmets were attached to scooters—90% were stolen or vandalized within weeks. The company also referenced similar regulations in Copenhagen, where all major providers exited the market due to plummeting usage.

Portland recorded 1.8 million shared bike and e-scooter trips in 2024, a 0.4% decline from 2023. E-scooter trips rose 7.6%, while e-bike trips fell 15% due to changes in the BIKETOWN for All program.
Paris Votes to Pedestrianize 500 More Streets
Parisians have voted to pedestrianize an additional 500 streets, aiming to enhance air quality and reduce car usage. In the referendum, 65.96% supported the measure, though voter turnout was low at 4.06%. This initiative will remove 10,000 parking spots, adding to the 10,000 already eliminated since 2020, bringing the total number of pedestrianized streets to nearly 700, just over one-tenth of the city's streets.
