Netherlands Leads Europe in Cycling Infrastructure
Segregated paths include protected lanes on high-traffic roads where mixing with vehicles is unsafe.
Extended infrastructure also includes bus lanes, cycle streets, and local roads built to bike-friendly standards.
URWAHN Enters Nordic Markets
German e-bike innovator URWAHN Bikes is expanding into Denmark and Sweden through a strategic partnership with Scandinavian leasing provider JOOLL. The collaboration aims to simplify access to premium, sustainable mobility via digitally supported bike leasing in both Scandinavia and Germany. URWAHN offers 3D-printed steel frames and customizable e-bike designs, with a focus on urban and gravel models.
E-Scooters Return to the Netherlands
In April 2025, the Netherlands introduced a new mandate to allow electric scooters and similar light electric vehicles on public roads from July 1st, provided they are registered, carry license plates, and pass RDW safety approvals. Just weeks after the introduction of e-scooters in Amsterdam, concerns have been raised over safety and congestion on bike lanes, even though national rules support the shift to regulated e‑mobility.
Ather’s EL Platform Debuts August 30
Ather Energy will debut its new EL electric scooter platform at its annual Community Day event in Bengaluru on August 30th. The platform is designed to be versatile and affordable, enabling Ather to introduce electric scooters priced below ₹1 lakh ($1,100) for the first time. The EL platform aims to help Ather compete in the lower-cost segment, addressing gaps in its lineup. Additionally, Ather is building a new factory in Maharashtra, with production of the EL platform expected to begin in early 2026.
Reykjavík City to Regulate Scooter Parking
Reykjavík plans stricter rules to tackle poorly parked electric scooters cluttering sidewalks and public spaces. The new regulations would prohibit parking near water protection zones, pedestrian-only streets, underpasses, and bike lanes. Additionally, the city would be empowered to create restricted zones, enforce low-speed areas, and mandate the removal of improperly parked scooters.
Dubai Debates E-Bike Ban
Dubai communities like Victory Heights and JBR are calling for a ban on e-bikes/scooters after 2024 saw 254 accidents (10 deaths, 259 injuries) and 13 fatalities by mid-2025, citing reckless riding, property damage, and resident safety complaints. Opponents argue bans unfairly target youth and restrict affordable transport. Experts like RoadSafetyUAE urge updated regulations: mandatory safety gear, riding tests, age limits, and designated zones instead of blanket bans, stressing enforcement and infrastructure to balance safety with sustainable mobility.
Ola Reports Wider Quarterly Loss
Ola Electric posted a net loss of ₹428 crore in Q1 FY26, a 23% year-on-year increase, while revenue halved to ₹828 crore, down nearly 50% year-on-year. Meanwhile, 90% of Ola Electric’s 432 showrooms in Maharashtra (388 outlets) face closure for operating without valid trade certificates. Across India, Ola Electric has 4.4k stores, of which 3.3k are company-owned and operated.
Chula Vista Tightens E-Bike Rules
Chula Vista is tightening regulations on e-bikes and other micromobility devices, going beyond California’s statewide rules. The city council approved new measures that ban Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes from riding on sidewalks in business districts and other areas where signs indicate restrictions. Similarly, motorized scooters are prohibited on roads where the speed limit is 40 mph or higher.
Nottingham Abandoned E-Bike Concerns
Residents in areas surrounding Nottingham report abandoned Lime rental e-bikes dumped outside the city's designated zone, blocking footpaths and creating hazards. Vandalised bikes with exposed wires and lithium-ion battery fire risks are key concerns. Local officials criticize the current fine system as ineffective and urge the rental company to implement remote immobilization (e.g., locked wheels) for bikes leaving designated zones.
NYC Cracks Down on E-Bike Safety, Expands Park Access
New York City announced a dual approach to address e-bike safety concerns and expand access. A new Department of Sustainable Delivery (DSD) within the DOT, funded with $6.1m, will enforce regulations targeting illegal and unsafe use of e-bikes, e-scooters, and mopeds used by delivery services.
