What You Need to Know Today
Austria Tops E-Bike Market Share in Europe
Austria holds the highest market share at 57.2%, followed by Germany (53.8%) and the Netherlands (47.7%). E-bike sales in the top European countries fell by 4.97% in 2024, totalling 4.07m units. France and Spain saw significant declines, Germany held steady, and Austria was the only country to register growth, up 2.53%.
However, despite growing market shares, the overall market value is shrinking. A steep 3.2% drop in average e-bike prices, from €2,770 in 2023 to €2,681 in 2024, led to a 7.8% fall in total market value, now at €10.1B.
Infinite Machine Unveils Olto Modular E-Bike
Infinite Machine launched its new e-bike model, Olto,, features an aluminum frame, magnetic foldable pedals, and modular accessories(child carriers, racks). Key innovations include automatic steering/wheel locks, GPS/AirTag integration, and tamper alerts via app. The e-bike packs a 40-mile range and a top speed of 20 mph top speed (33 mph off-road) with a 750W motor and swappable battery. The deliveries will commence in Fall 2025.
Umob App Integrates Dott's Global Micromobility Fleet
Dutch mobility platform Umob now offers Dott’s entire shared e-scooter and e-bike fleet, over 250k vehicles across 400 cities in 21 countries, through its app. The integration, launching first in Utrecht, enables users to book Dott rides alongside public transit and other services in a single interface. This follows Umob’s recent Lime partnership and supports Dott’s Netherlands expansion (currently 2k bikes in Utrecht/Eindhoven).
Pensacola Considers Ending E-Scooter Program
Pensacola may discontinue its Veo e-scooter rental program when the contract expires this fall, depending on resident feedback and data review. Officials cited persistent issues: GPS fails to block sidewalk/street use, underage riders access scooters via adults, and nighttime recreational use outweighs transport utility. The city launched surveys to gauge public support before deciding on renewal, noting minimal adoption for accessibility purposes as intended.
NYC Provides Free Safe E-Bikes
The NYC DOT and FDNY launched a free pilot program on June 12, distributing UL-certified e-bikes and batteries to over 400 delivery workers. Participants trade in uncertified e-bikes or illegal mopeds for safer equipment to reduce fire risks and improve street safety. Funded by $2m under Local Law 131, the initiative includes mandatory safety training and recycling of old devices.
Beam Enforces Strict E-Scooter Rules
E-scooter operator Beam has issued 2k warnings ("strikes") and permanently banned 160 riders in Geraldton since 2022, averaging 14 strikes and 1 ban weekly. Top violations include riding helmetless, dangerous parking, and tandem use. Beam’s AI parking tech now achieves 80% compliance, with 1k+ penalties issued. Beam’s contract for operating in Geraldton expires in January 2026.
Ghana Launches First Bike Share System
Ghana has launched its first-ever bike-share system, piloted by Aldin Cycles on the University of Ghana campus in Accra. The operator has launched with 100 mechanical bikes but is currently running 50. Rides are charged per minute, with a 30-minute trip costing GHS 6 (£0.44) and an hour costing GHS 12 (£0.87). There is potential for expansion of the scheme beyond university grounds into urban centres across Ghana.
Halifax Micromobility Pilot Faces Accessibility Concern
Halifax's shared e-bike/scooter pilot, launched on May 15 with 600 devices, is causing accessibility issues, with advocates reporting improperly parked devices blocking sidewalks and posing risks for visually impaired pedestrians. Operator Bird Canada uses AI technology for precise parking validation and enforces warnings, fines, and bans for violations. While no fines have yet been issued, the city has already relocated one obstructive parking station and plans to move more to on-street locations to help keep sidewalks clear. So far, riders have travelled over 24k km.
Hopp Maintains High Scooter Usage
Hopp, a micromobility operator in Reykjavík, reports that its e-scooters must average two trips per day. This usage rate is considered the minimum necessary to maintain the service’s viability. Each electric scooter at Hopp is currently used an average of four times per day. There are around 3.2k-3.3k scooters in circulation. From May to October, Hopp sees an average of 42k e-scooter users per month.
