What You Need to Know Today
Berlin, That Was Something - MME 2026!
Berlin delivered. Over two incredible days at Arena Berlin, the biggest edition of Micromobility Europe yet brought together the entire industry - founders, city planners, manufacturers, startups, and everyone in between. The kind of two days that remind you why this industry matters. Day one set the tone, honest about how far micromobility has come, and equally honest about how much further it can go. Day two carried that all the way through, right up to the Startup Awards, where a battery materials company took home gold and left everyone with a lot to think about. What stayed with us most, though, wasn't any single talk or announcement. It was the people, the meetings, the corridors, the connections made over two days that will quietly shape what comes next. Thank you to everyone who showed up, shared, and made this one count! We'll see you in San Francisco for Micromobility America 2026 on November 11-12.
Micromobility Solved Short Trips, Not Everyday Mobility
Relay Ventures Managing Partner Kevin Talbot argues that while micromobility has successfully addressed trips under three miles, it has failed to serve the majority of urban journeys, which are typically four to six miles long. With average new vehicle prices now exceeding $51k, up more than 25% in five years, he calls for a new category of lightweight, weather-protected micro-EVs, similar to Europe's L7e quadricycles and Japan's kei cars, to bridge the gap between scooters and conventional cars. Talbot contends that right-sized vehicles could improve affordability and efficiency while reducing reliance on oversized personal vehicles for short trips.
The Case for Light Intermediate Vehicles in Brussels
Brussels Mobility's policy advisor Martin Lefrancq presented the region's paper on light intermediate vehicles at Micromobility Europe 2026 in Berlin. The report argues that LIVs, seated, three- or four-wheeled vehicles capped at 90 km/h, sitting between the bicycle and the car, could replace over 80% of car trips made by Brussels residents. The report calls on the Brussels Capital Region to create a dedicated vehicle category in the highway code, introduce weight-based registration taxes, and adapt parking and licensing rules to accelerate LIV adoption.
The Second-Hand E-Bike Market Wasn't Supposed to Be This Big
A convergence of rising new e-bike prices, expiring lease contracts flooding Europe with refurbished stock, and tariffs on Chinese-made components has quietly turned the used e-bike market into a serious industry. In Germany, the used market is now twice the size of the new one. Platforms like Upway, which has refurbished 100k e-bikes since 2021 and closed a $60M Series C in November 2025, are professionalizing the space by solving the trust problem around battery health and warranties. With refurbished e-bike sales up around 192% since 2023 and Asia Pacific holding over 50% of global market share, what began as a pile-up of coincidences has hardened into structural demand.
An Introduction to E-Bikes in South America
South America's e-bike market remains small, estimated at between $136m and $250m in 2025, compared to $21.28B in Europe and $14.51B in Asia-Pacific, but early signals suggest a market in motion. Brazil dominates regional activity with 40% of the continent's roughly 55 bike-sharing systems and 17% of total e-bike market share in 2024, followed by Colombia and Argentina. Affordability and underdeveloped infrastructure remain the primary barriers to wider adoption, though projected CAGR of between 4.45% and 12% points to meaningful growth ahead, particularly in Brazil, Argentina, and Chile.
JET's Global South Playbook Is Paying Off
While much of the micromobility industry's attention has been focused on Europe and North America, Kazakhstan-based JET quietly expanded across the Global South, growing to 75k vehicles, 10m users, and 80m rides. The company’s rapid growth in Brazil, now its largest market, highlights the increasing importance of emerging economies in shaping the next phase of micromobility adoption. Beyond its scale, JET’s story underscores a broader industry trend, where future growth may be driven as much by expanding access in developing markets as by innovation in established ones.
